Dr. Stephen Shore
Dr. Stephen Shore was non-verbal until he was four years old, and was diagnosed with autistic tendencies. With support from many people throughout his life, today he is a professor at Adelphi University, where his research focuses on autism. An internationally recognized speaker, he is also the author of Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome, Ask and Tell: Self-advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum, and Understanding Autism for Dummies. Michael John Carley
Featured in Uniquely Human, Michael John Carley’s life is worthy of a full length novel or feature film. Living with undiagnosed with Asperger’s until he was an adult (he was finally diagnosed along with his four-year-old son), Michael struggled with social, communication, and behavior issues growing up. He was, however, a hard worker, waking up early in the morning to deliver newspapers, working after school polishing jewelry, and playing guitar in clubs at night. He began to achieve academically in the 10th grade, graduated college in three years, and became a Bertolt Brecht scholar — and that was just the beginning of an astonishing and fascinating career. Elaine Hall is the founder of the Miracle Project, a theatre and arts program for individuals with autism and disabilities designed to build social and communication skills and foster greater self-esteem.
