Located 30 miles northwest of Houston, Texas, Tomball Independent School District (ISD) serves over 15,800 students across 20 schools. Guided by its whole-student approach, the district is committed to addressing students’ mental health needs through innovative, restorative practices, and a comprehensive multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). However, rising behavioral concerns left the district’s resources stretched thin.

Challenges

Growing mental health concerns

Tomball ISD faced a growing number of students in need, with families turning to schools for support due to limited local counseling services. However, with existing resources already stretched thin, behavioral issues often led to disciplinary actions rather than addressing underlying causes. Recognizing the urgency, the district sought immediate, scalable solutions to deliver Tier 2 early mental health interventions to students in need.

Solutions

A new framework for accessible mental health services

Presence quickly became a vital part of Tomball ISD’s Behavioral Health System of Care, enabling the district to address student mental health needs. The partnership included several key components: (1) a 6-week Tier 2 remote counseling program, (2) weekly social-emotional learning (SEL) sessions focused on emotional regulation, (3) calming techniques, and (4) an integrated MTSS progress tracking system to monitor student goals. Certified school psychologists collaborated closely with onsite staff to align interventions and refine student plans as needed.

Key results

From at-risk to on-track with student mental health
